Jersey, the international trademark, and you.
Until now, designating the United Kingdom in an international trademark automatically covered Jersey.
Effective August 1, 2026, Jersey will become an independent designation under the Madrid System (WIPO).
What’s Changing
From now on, Jersey will need to be considered separately in order to:
- A new warehouse
- A subsequent designation
- A renewal
The applicable taxes will be announced shortly.
What about your already registered trademarks?
WIPO will automatically add a designation for Jersey. The United Kingdom and Jersey will then go their separate ways.
Exception: If proceedings are pending in the United Kingdom, Jersey is added only after protection has been granted in the United Kingdom. A rejection in the United Kingdom means no Jersey.
To believe that the United Kingdom is enough is to leave yourself vulnerable to incomplete protection.
Jersey is a market in its own right. Starting August 1, failing to take this into account will leave you without protection on the island.
